Today I thought I’d have a chat about the #1 lusted after highlighter of the season. The Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed. I got the shade Moonstone because I thought that would best suit my skin tone. From what I have read about the shades I think I was right. I know Champagne Pop went a bit nuts because it’s a collaboration with Jaclyn Hill but I don’t think it would have worked for me.

The Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector (BSSP I’m going to call it from now on so I don’t have to type all of that out each time) is rather pricey. At around $46 NZ from RY.com.au it’s not something you’d buy impulsively. So I thought I’d be the test dummy today (well, that’s what I told my partner) and let you know if YOU should buy it! Sounds good? Okay let’s go.

Packaging

The packaging on this one represents the money you pay for it well. It’s really well made and feels like quality if that makes sense. It feels heavy. The black on the packaging is rather NARS-esque  and then it’s got a silver metal panel on the top. To be entirely honest I think the packaging is hella-ugly. It just doesn’t look very appealing at all. However the product is so lovely you sort of forget about it I guess. It is nice and sturdy and definitely high-quality though so that’s a plus.

Size + Price

The size of this one seems sort of small in the packaging. However I think that’s because the packaging is quite deep and it starts fairly low down so it looks like there isn’t much there. It is 8 grams of product though and if that doesn’t mean anything to you then we could compare it to theBalm Mary-Lou Manizer $36NZD which seems huge and is 8.5 grams or to the Mac Cosmetics Mineralise Skinfinish range $60NZD which are 0.35 oz which is almost 10 grams or to Stila Kitten Highlighting Duo $35NZD which is only 0.18 oz or 5.1 grams. Comparatively it’s not too bad, but is on the expensive side.

Colour

I find the colour to be very similar to theBalm Mary-Lou Manizer – a light champagne hue. It’s probably a little lighter than Mary-Lou and a little less shimmery. It’s a gorgeous colour and I find it really flattering on my pale skin tone. It’s not too over-the-top and not too subtle either. It also reflects the light beautifully. I like that it’s not a really bold colour, whereas it’s more of an actual highlight. Some highlighters are more coloured if you get my drift.

Pigmentation + Formula

The pigmentation is outstanding. I only need to lightly swipe my brush over the product and it’s packed on there. It’s very finely milled and looks absolutely stunning and sinks into the skin because of this. I find sometimes highlighters can be quite powdery and sit on top of the skin in a weird sort of way. With this product it is not the case. It’s silky smooth and it becomes part of your face. The formula is very very luxurious. I really like that a little goes a long way because of the price. I feel like each swipe of the brush is costing me like 50 cents though.

Overall

I think there’s two options here, depending on your collection and/or obsession with makeup. If you are super into highlighters (like me) I’d 110% recommend this one. Like, if you’re the type of person that simply needs the latest products and gives in to the hype then yes, buy it. I mean, it’s not THAT expensive and I’m guessing you’ve probably spent more on a single makeup product before so, why not?

However, if you own Mary-Lou Manizer, or don’t really “get” highlighting, or have a few highlighters already and don’t use them every day OR if you’re a makeup newbie. I’d probably say don’t buy it…yet. You probably won’t get that excited about it and there’s other similar products for cheaper that are out there.

Pros:

Looks amazing, everyone wants it, study packaging, plenty of product, good for pale skin, super pigmentation!

Cons:

Quite similar to Mary-Lou Manizer, ugly packaging, expensive, you can’t swatch it before you buy it, you feel guilty each time you use it.
