Review | The 6 Best Highlighters of ALL-TIME!

Highlighters makeup favourite swatches review

Good morning class,

I’m typing this one with a big smile today because highlighters happen to be my all-time favourite makeup product, and in fact, they’re partly the reason why I became so makeup-obsessed in the first place! Today I’m going to chat about my favourite highlighters and why, and I’m also going to ask you to PLEASE tell me what your favourites are?! I’d love to buy some more highlighters to add to my collection, so I’d love to know what you’ve been loving!

I have narrowed the collection down to a top 6 which includes both powder and cream formulas and a few different shades so these should suit those of you with different skin tones and skin types to me! These are not just for pale people.

I’ve swatched all the highlighters on my finger because I find it shows the true pigmentation and shade much better than an arm swatch! So please excuse my wee pink fingers. Thank you.

The Balm Mary Lou-manizer swatches highlighter

I’m going to start with my number #1, the only, TheBalm Mary-Lou Manizer! If you’ve been following me for a while (or had a big stalk of my older posts) you’d know that Mary-Lou is one of my mains. She’s versatile, she’s magnificently pigmented, she’s fairly cheap, and she’s actually just a total babe. Honestly, just take a wee moment to look at her. The pan is huge. Her texture is velvety-smooth and she never ever dries out. I’ve never found a powder with a texture as gorgeous as Mary-Lou. You can buy her for a cool $34NZ from makeup.co.nz . IF YOU DON’T HAVE HER, PLEASE BUY HER NOW. I’m not joking. You need her.

ZA Cheeks groovy June Bride swatches

June Bride from the ZA Cheeks Groovy range is a gorgeous little dupe for NARS Albatross (I am told) and despite wanting to buy said NARS product, I always feel like I don’t need to now that I own this wee gem. The Cheeks Groovy range is a range of gorgeous blushes, although June Bride is definitely a highlighter. June is rather powdery, but has a stunning colour pay-off that blends into a gorgeous, subtle glow. I love the way she is almost white gold toned, however blends out so nicely to a golden sheen that she would suit any skin tone. I think that for the price (around $20 NZ) June Bride is a bit of a steal! You can buy her from ZA Stockists

MAC highlighter Mineralise Skin finish Lightscapade

I’ve still got my MAC Mineralise Skin Finish Lightscapade in the old packaging I know! But honestly, I feel like I’ll never run out. The MAC Mineralise pans are SO huge and packed full of product that even though they’re around $60 NZ, they’re sort of worth it! Lightscapade was my first powder by MAC and I still love her to this day. She’s a really beautiful marbled white highlight that is unbelievably flattering on pale skin. Mine doesn’t look so marbled anymore, and I definitely need to buy a new one, but she still does the job! She’s not extremely pigmented, but you wouldn’t want her to be considering she’s quite white. She’s perfectly pigmented in my opinion and she blends like a dream. She’s not as velvety as Mary-Lou but she is smooth like silk and very finely milled. She is luxury in a pan.

Colourpop Highlighter Smokin' Whistles

Colourpop does a gorgeous range of highlighters and I own nearly all of them. I am obsessed with nearly all the ones I own, and it was difficult for me to choose one from my wee stash. I chose Smokin’ Whistles because of his (yes, this ones a boy) pigmentation and his delightful colour. He’s sort of a rose gold, and is oh-so pigmented! He’s got the same texture as all of the other highlighters and products by Colourpop (which you can read about in my previous 7 blog posts about Colourpop) and I absolutely adore that texture. It’s like slightly bouncy and mousse-like and it feels like a soft cloud. Smokin’ Whistles looks stunning on the cheek bones and is super duper pigmented so you don’t need too much! The Colourpop highlighters are unlike anything I’ve ever seen before and I really do recommend them. They’re also only $6 US each. Woohoo!

Stila Kitten Duo swatches review

Look, I get it. You’re probably sick of me going on and on about the Stila Kitten Duo so I’m going to keep this one short and sweet okay? Basically, if you’ve been living under a rock, Stila has a shade of eye shadow, highlighter, lip gloss etc called Kitten. She’s the most beautiful and dazzling shade of anything I’ve ever come across and she’s my favourite eye shadow shade ever. She also comes in a highlighter duo form. Which I am (of course) obsessed with. I’ve talked about her on the blog many-a-time and I think she’s absolutely wonderful and I get the most compliments when I wear her. You can read about how amazing she is right here.

Essence Soo Glow Highlighter

Last, but certainly not least is the Essence Soo Glow! highlighter in Look on the Bright Side which retails for a sweet $6.40 in NZD! This formula looks a bit funny, I know. But she’s a cream to powder finish which is great because it means she applies with a wet creamy consistency, and changes to this gorgeous iridescent powder form that is totally stuck in place on your beautiful cheek bones! The colour I’ve got is a champagne-white shade which is similar to both June Bride and Lightscapade. She is super duper duper pigmented and blends out with ease. I think this one is a must-buy for the price! Essence is found at your local Farmers in NZ.

And that’s it folks! TELL ME YOUR FAVOURITE HIGHLIGHTERS, please! I I love these ones, and the others that I own, obviously. But I want to buy moooore. Do you own and love (or hate) any of these ones? Have I made you buy any from this post (please say Mary-Lou!)?
